  • Description

Maw Sit Sit is an extremely rare, unique and valuable stone often mistaken for jade.  It was found exclusively in Taw Maw, Myanmar, Burma, hence the name.  Credit is given to Dr. Edward Guebelin, who reported and described it in the mid 60’s.  It was mostly mined out by 1970. It is composed of many different minerals, the most significant being chromium, as that is what determines the intensity of the famed green color.  Typically, maw-sit-sit is a brilliant chrome green with interesting mosaics or veins of dark green, black or white, formed from accompanying minerals.

The saturation of the chromium green in combination with interesting markings is what determines the value of a particular stone. This lapidary material is very rare and extremely difficult to find, particularly high-quality material.  This material will make exquisite, superior pieces. It is a 6-6.5 on the Mohs scale and is best finished with diamond compound.

Origin:  Myanmar

Dimensions: 1.55" x 1.25" and approximately 5.8 mm thick.  Weight = 21 grams.

Shown wet. Not polished. Known flaws are shown as white lines in the final picture frame.
